この映画は1939年1月1日から制作が開始され、
1939年9月9日～1940年10月2日まで撮影が行われました。
プレミア公開が1940年10月15日でした。
なぜ年号にこだわったかというと・・・・・・
①もうまさにヒトラーが勢力を拡大させている時期
であることの再確認したかったから。

１９３９年３月：チェコスロバキア併合
１９３９年９月１日：ポーランド侵攻

このように、ヒトラーがポーランド侵攻し、
第二次世界大戦への拡大していった１９３９年９月に
チャップリンはこの映画『独裁者』の撮影を開始したのです。
②アメリカ国内で、黒人が公民権を得たのは1963年。
60年代ですら、南部ではレストランや公共の乗り物に黒人専用の席があるなど、
まだまだバリバリ黒人差別が激しかったのです。
なので、「黒人を助けたい」というこのセリフは、
現在以上に重みのある勇気ある言葉だということを伝えたかったのです。

goose-stepped: ひざを曲げずに脚を高く上げる行進歩調のこと。第二次世界大戦中のドイツ兵の行進に見られた。

動詞として使う場合、自動詞（vi）の使用例しか
辞書では掲載されていないのですが、
ここでは他動詞（vt）として使われていますね。
まあ、intoは変化を表す前置詞、ということを考えると、
「私たち」を「悲劇と殺戮」へと追いやった、ということなのでしょうね。

でも。
そのために、人間は孤独になってしまったのではないでしょうか。
人間は単なる大きな機械の一部。部品になってしまった。
電車に乗って通勤すると、
皆が黙々と電車に乗り込んだり、
エスカレーターを歩いていたり、
マニュアルに書かれている言葉で（自分の考えた言葉でなく）
駅員がアナウンスしている姿を見かけたりします。
そこには人間同士の心の触れ合いがありません。
現代社会はスピードを開発したおかげで「効率」は良くなったのかもしれませんが、
より孤独を感じてしまうような環境に変えてしまった、と言えるかもしれません。

Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical; our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity.

このヒロイン役のハンナの名前ですが、
チャップリンの母親の名前もハンナでした。
この映画撮影は１９３９年から開始されましたが、
この１０年前、１９２９年にチャップリンの最愛の母は亡くなりました。
